The Pirates got behind early and weren’t able to overcome the high-power offense of the Philadelphia Phillies today at McKechnie Field. The Phillies won the game, 7-4.
Buccos’ starter Kevin Correia ran into trouble very early. The Phillies had four hits and led 2-0 before he was able to record an out. After the rough start, Correia settled in and pitched well after getting behind by a couple runs. He completed his 3 innings of work, giving up just a single hit after the first inning, and striking out five Phillies’ batters.
The day started off rough and only got worse for Fernando Nieve, who was lit up on Friday by the Phillies. He gave up four runs on five hits through 1.1 innings, including a homerun to Ryan Howard in the sixth inning.
The Pirates’ offense was relatively impressive against the Phillies’ highly publicized pitching staff. They strung four consecutive hits together in the bottom of the first inning against starter Joe Blanton, but were only able to score one run.
In the bottom of the sixth, Neil Walker led off with a walk, and ground-rule doubles by Tony Sanchez and Andy Marte gave the Pirates the lead.
Unfortunately, the Phillies answered with three runs in the seventh inning, and the Pirates weren’t able to match it the rest of the game.
The Pirates tallied 10 hits on Friday, but weren’t able to keep pace with the high-octane offense of the Phillies. Marte, who had 2 RBI in the game, was the only Bucco with a multi-hit afternoon, while Lyle Overbay and Garrett Jones also drove home a run a piece in the losing effort.
The Pirates will face the Phillies again tomorrow afternoon, this time at the Phillies Spring Training home in Clearwater , FLa. Pittsburgh
